いたずらで、ふざけてとありますが、この他に下記の英語の定義にあるようにon a whimという意味もあります。英辞郎によると、「〔行動などが〕気まぐれに、思い付きで、ふと思い付いて」ということなので、on a larkもそういう意味があります。
私の経験からですが、この「〔行動などが〕気まぐれに、思い付きで、ふと思い付いて」の使い方の方が圧倒的に多いと思います。
