Grammarly is a free grammar and spell checker that is far better than what is in Microsoft Word. In addition to a plug-in for your browser (Chrome, Safari, and Firefox) which allows you to check your writing on any website, there are also stand-alone applications for Windows and Macs, and even a plug-in for Microsoft Word for Windows (but none for MS Word for Mac to my chagrin). The Grammarly website even has a plagiarism checker and proofreader. (The plagiarism checker and proofreader are Premium only, but you can try it out on the website.)
