本来は、Harry Potterの小説・映画の中で、魔法を使えない人を半ば軽蔑的に言う言葉であるが、今では、上記のような意味を持つようにもなった。
マリフアナたばこの意味の語源は、はっきりしないが、１９２０年代のNew Orleansで使われるようになった。
