英辞郎によると、

〈米俗〉急速に悪化［没落・破滅・荒廃］する、あっという間に駄目になる◆【語源】手提げのついた籠は持ちやすいので、中の物を簡単に持っていけることから「すぐに」という意味になった。

同じ意味で、Go to hell in a handcartということもありますが、この言い方の方が珍しい。
