語源
According to The Phrase Finderによると、現代英語で使用されていないが、古語英語でpaleの他の意味に「杭」や「尖った木」がありました。この意味からpaling fence（尖った杭の柵）は、このような柵に囲まれた領地を言うようになり、やがて比喩的に「囲まれて安全な場所」と言う意味になりました。したがって、beyond the paleは、安全な場所の外という意味になったのです。
Etymology
According to The Phrase Finder,"...there is another meaning of 'pale' - 'a stake or pointed piece of wood'. This meaning is now virtually obsolete except as used in this phrase.The paling fence is significant as the term 'pale' came to mean the area enclosed by such a fence and later just figuratively 'the area that is enclosed and safe'. So to be 'beyond the pale' was to be outside the area accepted as 'home'.
