そもそもtake a kneeは、アメリカンブットボールの用語で、勝っているチームが残り時間を経過させるために使う作戦です。簡単にいうと、ボールを受け取ったクォータバック(QB)が、すぐに片膝をついてプレイを止め、試合時間だけを経過させる作戦。
ところが、2016年のプレシーズン中にSan Francisco 49ersのQBのColin Kaepernickが黒人に対する差別が絶えないことに抗議する意味で、国歌斉唱中に起立をしなければならない場面でひざまずいたために、賛否両論を呼び、一部の選手の間に広まった。この時、とった行動がtake a kneeと言われた。
