英辞郎によると、

1. 塩を含んだ、塩気の強い、塩の効いた、塩辛い
2. 海の、船乗りの
3. 〔表現などが〕気の利いた、生き生きした、辛辣な
4. 〈米俗〉怒った

1番の意味は、ほとんどの人は知っていると思いますが、2番から4番まではあまり知られていないかもしれません。
また、英辞郎で2番の訳は「海の、船乗りの」となっています。「船乗りの」の訳は全くの間違いではないのですが、「乱暴な、下劣な」等のニュアンスが含まれています。問題文でも主語は、sailor（船乗り）になっているので、かつて船乗りは乱暴で下品な印象があったことからこのような意味になります。（下記英語の4番目の定義。）
