西部劇で駅馬車(stagecoach)が出てくる場合、運転手(driver)の横にもう一人が乗っている。この人は、express messengerまたはshotgun messengerと呼ばれ、護衛として乗っているので散弾銃を持っており、護衛として駅場所に乗ることを「Riding shotgun」という。（口語でriding shotgunは他にも「人に付き添う」「人を助ける」等の意味もある。）そこから、次第に助手席を「shotgun seat」というようになった。
Etymology:
If you've ever watched a western, then you've probably seen a stagecoach. Next to the driver there is usually a guy riding with a shotgun to protect the stagecoach. This is called, "Riding shotgun." That seat came to be known as the shotgun seat. So, when someone cries out, "Shotgun," it means that he or she wants that seat.
