shopping spree

に訳されている。

しかし、Japan Timesは、

explosive shopping

としている。

個人的には、shopping spreeでいいと思う。なぜなら、shopping spreeという言葉は、少なくて私が子供だった頃からある言葉で、おそらくそれ以上に古い。反面、「爆買い」という言葉ができるまでは、shopping spreeの訳としてしっくりくる日本語がなかった。
Shopping spreeの訳として英辞郎では、「買い物をしまくること、爆買い、買い物好き、買物熱、湯水のような金遣い」の訳をあげているけれど、「爆買い」以外は、妙に長かったり、「ちょっと違う」と思う訳しかない。

したがって、直訳のexplosive shoppingより、「爆買い」の適訳は、もともとあった英語の表現であるshopping spreeが適切だと思う。

Personally, I feel that shopping spree is the better translation. My reasoning is that the term has been around for as long as I know, and almost certainly far longer than that. Conversely, until the Japanese term bakugai was created, there was no simple way to say shopping spree in Japanese.
Eijiro has a number of Japanese translations for shopping spree other than bakugai, but all of them are either cumbersome or a little off in meaning.
Therefore, I think that shopping spree is a better translation for bakugai than the literally translated "explosive shopping" which was probably made up by the Japan Times.
